About Our Topic – Tariffs Impact on the Global Economy:

The US has been one of the largest participants and advocates of global free trade. This has led Americans to have among the highest standard of living in the world. Some would argue, however, that free trade has also led to American job loss and a weakening of America’s competitiveness.  The President has established a tariff policy to restore perceived imbalances in trade.

How much do we really understand about tariffs? The President sees them as an economic tool to rebalance trade in favor of America, while foreign nations see them as punishment for success. Have our trading partners really been taking advantage of us? What exactly are trade deficits and are they actually bad in either the short or long term?  How are these policies playing out in our own economy as well as with our trading partners?

As with most policies, someone benefits and someone is disadvantaged.

The discussion will examine how tariff policies reshape trade, investment, and supply chains, with particular attention to their impact on emerging economies. These and other questions will be addressed by professor Frieden in this timely and important program.
